Scotland launches national food waste campaign

10/10/2012 - According to the Scottish Government, one-fifth of the food and drinks bought by Scottish households is thrown away. This avoidable food waste costs the average Scottish household £430 a year and creates harmful greenhouse gases.

01/10/2012 – 40% of food in the U.S. goes to waste, amounting to a loss of more than $165 billion dollars, says a recent report from the Natural Resources Defense Council.

According to the report, the average American throws away $28-433 worth of food each month, creating around 20 pounds of food waste. Nearly all of the wasted food – over 33 million tons - ends up in landfills, where it decomposes and releases methane, a greenhouse gas 21 times more potent than carbon dioxide.
