A first batch of detailed waste prevention factsheets was uploaded here during the European Week for Waste Reduction between 19 and 27 November 2011.

In the following weeks some 50 Good Practice factsheets will be available here.

Each PDF factsheet presents on about 7 pages: the local context, how the action was implemented, resources used, results obtained, recommendations and similar actions elsewhere.

Among these 50 cases some 27 have been identified as best practices.

R.U.S.Z. (Reparatur und Service Zentrum – Repair and Service Center) is a special initiative in Vienna, where jobless people are trained to repair goods at affordable prices and disassemble electronic equipment so that hazardous and non-hazardous waste is separated. Items most commonly repaired are electronic and electrical household devices.

It created an enormous demand for repair services which sowed the seeds of the Repair Network Vienna, a network of some 60 private, profit-oriented repair companies and was followed by the creation of three other repair networks in Austria (

EQUAL - A Reuse Initiative in Malta

The project for the restoration of used furniture and other materials in Malta amalgamated the environmental concern with a social context. People at risk of social exclusion received training in furniture renovation and in recycled creative crafts until they were able to carry out this activity independently. The idea was to assist people who encountered difficulty with securing employment given their particular personal circumstances. At the same time, this project extended the lifetime of furniture and other unwanted material which would otherwise have been disposed of.

Cluster Sofia: Home composting

At the territory of the European Union in acquis communautaire and according to Waste Framework Directives 75/442/EEC, 2006/12/EC and 2008/98/EC on waste management exists different strategies, programs and plans for management of biodegradable waste. Every country in the EU choose how to organize the system for biodegradable waste, so as to achieve the targets for preliminary treatment of waste in order to reduce the biodegradable waste going to landfills.

The disposable diapers represent about 4-5% of total waste produced in Italy in recent years. With concern to the Municipality of Colorno, disposable diapers represent about 23% of the household solid waste.

The project "Light Kids" is targeted to families with children and to the municipal crèche. The goal, in the medium term, was to achieve a drastic reduction in the number of disposable diapers purchased, encouraging the use of durable diapers. The project provided the requirement to use washable diapers or biodegradable diapers for the company that deals with the management of municipal crèche up to use only durable diapers. A three-year contribution for each child of the families involved was prepared in order to cover, partially, the procurement costs of the families within the first three years of child’ life.

082 The Real Nappy Campaign, UK

Milton Keynes has a growing population with a large proportion of young families. Facing increasing pressure to accomodate household waste in local landfills as well as new UK targets to reduce biodegradable municipal waste. Milton Keynes designed a targeted  scheme  to address this major component on th borough's landfill  problem. A guide for parents was created, feturing step by step instructions to simplify the switch to reusable nappies and detailed  local information on suppliers as well as laundering services. A central element of the real nappy campaign in Milton Keynes is its cash-back incentive scheme. The cash-back incentive scheme is offering families who invest more than 60 sterling in reusable nappies a payment of 35 to 40 sterling.

The aim of the project called IDEAL79 is to reduce the amount of residual waste collected by 10% in 3 years by increasing professionals and households awareness on waste prevention. This project aims at reducing the amount and the toxicity of waste production by acting on the design stage and encouraging sustainable consumption.

It also have qualitative objectives:

-       Design a real dynamic between institutional,  economical and associative actors;

-       Implant a sustainable consumption culture to these actors and also to the population

The aim of this project is to follow the offer of eco-friendly products compared to their less environmental counterparts in France. The project was implemented in 4 steps:

1)     Definition and characterization of the products usually bought by French consumers for a given utility and for different size of households.

2)     Development of a methodology that enables to measure the “waste contain” of different trolley (the best ones and the worst ones in terms of waste) for different size of households. Several "shopping-trolleys" were identified to do so: an "average trolley" for a 2.3 people household, a "mini waste" and a "maxi waste" trolley for a one person household and a "mini waste" and a "maxi waste" trolley for a 4 person household.

3)     Recommendation to disseminate the results.

4)     Drafting of a methodological guide enabling to transfer the method.
