Tampere Regional Solid Waste Management Ltd. (TRSWM) is a Finnish company established in 1994 to manage the solid waste of the region on behalf of its owner municipalities. It’s today owned by 17 municipalities including the city of Tampere, which supervises and sets local regulations on solid waste management. The region covered has around 415 000 inhabitants, some 27 000 companies and an area of 11 600 km². The activities of the company include collection, processing and disposal of waste, research and development, as well as consumer advice on waste management issues, including waste avoidance. TRSWM has produced innovative information material for the consumers and there is a second hand market service on its web page. It is partner in projects funded by the European Commission’s LIFE programme and member of Eurocities Waste Policy Group, and is working in Municipal Waste Europe and ACR+.


The owner municipalities of Tampere RSWM Ltd. initiated the development of a waste strategy in 2001. The representatives of the owner municipalities formed a consultative committee for the implementation of the waste strategy. The realisation of the waste strategy is monitored annually. The consultative committee participates in preparing the regional waste plan coordinated by environmental administration. Theme seminars are arranged annually on waste issues.

Tampere RSWM Ltd brings to the project Finnish approach on waste prevention issues (e.g.: packaging sector). It will be involved, in particular, in communication activities (publication of press releases, organisation of a national event on waste prevention and a press conference, as well as support to the communication manager for communication tasks, like the website and the newsletter), the identification of good practices and indicators, the implementing of some good practices on its territory and the drafting of feasibility studies, the participation to a shared methodology to help local authorities implement an effective waste prevention, as well as the participation to the web tool for monitoring waste prevention policies effectiveness, based on indicators.
